Students don’t need to be good writers (or even like to write) to craft a compelling story—they just need to spend the time and effort to reflect on what elements to include and then more time and effort to work through multiple drafts until their stories are engaging and illuminative. Some students can do this on their own; many other students need a little support through this process, which is so different from what they’ve learned about academic writing.
I work one-on-one with students (either in person locally or virtually anywhere) to:
- Brainstorm ideas for the common application personal statement and specific college supplemental essays
- Create simple but effective outlines for each essay topic
- Find their writing voice and show who they are to tie together all the other elements on their college application
I can also help with:
- Demystifying and uncomplicating the college application process
- Ensuring a student’s college list is balanced and serves their goals
- Understanding financial aid and how to search for colleges that fit the family’s budget
- Development of an engaging activities list for the common application
- Scholarship essays
